Dubai airport closed for eight hours after plane accident
"DUBAI: Dubai International Airport will be closed for at least eight hours on Monday after a Biman Bangladesh Airlines aircraft was involved in an accident while trying to take off, officials said. All 236 passengers, including crew, are safe, and were immediately evacuated from the aircraft. Fourteen passengers sustained minor injuries."
Okay, but what does that have to do with me? ME?
Don and I packed our bags this morning and drove to Dubai airport, planning to be in Dublin by early afternoon so we could see KRISTIN HERSH at Temple Bar Music Center. Ran through the curiously passenger-free security lines, pushed our way to the check-in counter, and were told, "We're closing the airport." We looked around and noticed the stunned faces on the zombies all around us. The public address system asked "all passengers to proceed to Safa Restaurant for refreshments."
We'd been looking forward to that concert for weeks! We've been listening to her amazing new album Learn to Sing Like a Star pretty much constantly, planning the trip and all the details. We know that fans are meeting for a pint at Porterhouse before the show. I predicted this morning on the way to the airport that she would open with "In Shock."
Here's a picture I took over a year ago. That's way too long. By tonight I was supposed to be hearing Kristin
scream sing her head off.
Edit: From Flightglobal.com: "The A310 – one of four operated by the airline, according to Flight’s ACAS database – was operating a service to Dhaka. Some reports suggest the aircraft suffered a tyre burst and/or nose-gear collapse during its take-off roll. Pictures of the accident show that the aircraft appears to have come to rest at the far end of Runway 12L with its nose gear collapsed."
I just called the hostel and canceled our booking. Cry!

Re: Crash and Burn
Wanna sing some karaoke? List a few of those songs you like and Don can try to find karaoke tracks online. He found a really good source! We've got nothing going on today or tomorrow. Write us here or give me a call or text! Or, uh, just show up!

That'd be great! Maybe you want to have dinner with your family before you come over, in which case we'll be here!
If you work early and want to come over earlier (like if your family forgoes dinner), come over anytime! Like now! Or later!

Hahaha, Don just showed me the video of you singing "Sweet Child of Mine," Kali playing with your shoelace, and me in a coma next to you.
(How did I sleep through those tunes?? When I was talking to you, were my eyes even open?)
I asked Don hmm, what about sus isnt she gonna eat ? He was like no i will cook. I was hmm nice, wife sleeping hubbie cooks cute.
Wait, why did they close the airport? Don't they have a shorter second runway most planes could use?
Well, I guess it's a darn good thing for passengers that the UAE builds airports at 50-mile intervals on its west coast. Not that any of the others could take the entire load from Dubai, or that it'll do any good for planes trapped in DXB.
I heard that lots of inbound flights were diverted to Muscat, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah. Which isn't SO out of the way.
I've seen incidents in Dubai affecting large numbers of passengers (a Royal Brunei flight cancelled, a Swiss Air flight cancelled, or lots of flights delayed 2 or 3 hours due to fog) but I can't really fathom how many people it affects for DUBAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT to be closed for most of a day. I mean, hot dang!
aww - that's a real shame :(
Sorry you missed the concert. I'm sure this affected many others as well.
