Durrance Household Indophilia Takes a Dangerous Turn [Nov. 5th, 2008|09:53 pm]

What I wanna know is, how come everybody at Nick & Misha's party (well, at least two people) said it was "obvious" I wasn't a real Indophile?

(Because a "real" Indophile wouldn't dress so blasphemously?)

Putting on finishing touches...

Shiva and Parvatthi! Blue feet! Fierce!

It's webwawa! I didn't recognize her! She intimidated me!

We upper-tier deities pose like this a lot.

There's ambient1 on the right, with Clay and Beth as a hedonist and a sophist, and a sharply dressed stranger.

Who were you again, ambient1? Sorry, I know I kept asking, but I forget things.

Our host, Lo Pan, dances with Sarah Palin and one sophist.

Exactly! Like that! Fashoo, I'm sure glad I'm not a rich, beautiful, successful, world-famous supermodel!

We wanted to try to have a reunion this visit, but we came back early (left Texas early on the 3rd). Next time, I hope. :^)

> "at a Halloween party has enraged the Hindu leaders in America, "

I tell you these chaps are a bunch of dim bulbs. I saw that photo in our papers here in India and wasn't enraged. Though I was sure a bunch of dim bulbs would be!

And India so far no reaction. I suppose since Kali Klum was out of Indian waters;-)

someone on a newsgroup i used to hang out in coined the brilliant term "offense kleptomaniacs" - the kind of people who, when they see any sort of offense, take it.

Yeah we hear of those chaps, always rushing off to a court to file a case against someone who has "offended someone's sentiment". I hate them.

I am non-trivially impressed by the success you two had in dressing up.

WHOA! I totally missed Lo Pan the first time I scrolled through these. Indeed, that costume party was overflowing with awesomeness.

You guys make nice deities!

The only way this would rule slightly more, is if we could get someone in a Marty McFly costume up in the joint! =D

I thought you both looked incredible and thank you both for attending and the attention you put into your costumes. ':)

P.S. Parvatthi? Ack. I completely got the deity name wrong. I can't keep all these Indian/Hindu or Buddhist gods/goddesses straight. LOL

Actually in your case there won't be any outrage from Hindu leaders;-) Since they might mistake the two of you to be Hindus;-) In which case it is al right for them;-)

Yours are the best costumes I've ever seen. Simply awesome! The first picture has a "wax museum" quality I'm trying to figure out.

I can't see any reasonable person being offended by your costumes. Considering that you know the significance of the deities you are impersonating and the meaning of each piece you are wearing, I'm not really clear what the difference is between your costumes and those worn by devotees at the appropriate festivals. Well, you didn't redden hubby's eyes with the juice from eggplant seeds so he would seem less human, but I don't see how that's offensive.

The Krisna lunch boxes that nobody seems to be offended by, I think would be offensive. I'm unclear if the Hindu deity fingerpuppets I have (Shiva, Kali, Ganesha, and Garuda) are offensive or not. I gather that the Monster In My Pocket Kali figurine was not offensive but the trading card describing her was.
