Where we buy our toiletries [Jul. 4th, 2006|05:28 am]

doc_cathode wanted to see where we buy our toiletries and food. The truth is, I buy most of our toiletries in England, Thailand, Singapore, and New York. But when we buy toiletries in Dubai, we buy them at Carrefour. Are you familiar with this French hypermart? It's like Wal-Mart but all the products are different.

Carrefour is all over the Gulf

Majid Al Futtaim, a billionaire Emirati businessman, has the rights to put them all over the MENA area, I believe. Given that he also owns the very successful City Centre malls, he often has the perfect real estate for them as well. Which suits me just fine, it's a great place to shop, except for what are often overly long queues. There is only one Geant in Dubai, and I've not looked around it much.

I do really like the Ibn Battuta mall, though, since it's on DIC-net (Du, etc.), and thus unfiltered/fast, even at the free Internet cafe.

I didn't know that! I like that mall, too, because last time I was there was with my parents, and the A/C was good and chilly and there were displays about Islamic science history all around.

I can hardly tell the difference between Carrefour and Geant. But I always remember this review of Geant printed in Time Out Dubai, where the writer said he wanted to pay with a AED 100 note, and the cashier taunted him and said, "Trying to be the big man, aren't you!" *snicker*

ATMs only give out 100s and 500s I thought!

I got stuck with a bunch of 1000s last time I was in dubai (well, not a bunch, but some). That was kind of annoying because I kept getting them confused with 10s.
