To Whom it May Concern,

I am writing to request the unblocking of Shelfari.com.

Something I didn't know - one can use the internet without networking with other people. This is important, because if you do network with people on the net, you might already be dating them before you can resist.

I love how they just lie

My blog was officially blocked for "nudity" - there has never, ever been a single photo or picture in it, by design (I wanted it to be solely text).

They are so lazy and so arrogant, they don't care how obvious their lies are.

"dating"

Yes, the process of pelting someone with a small, dry desert fruit until they do what you want them to.

24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

What really peeves me is that LiveJournal is blocked, so I'm forced to either use one of various sneakarounds, or give up a major hobby. But the telecom company has blocked it by DNS or something, rather than this official eCompany route. So I can't even submit a request to unblock it - which would be in vain anyway because: Dating.

was just gonna ask how you ljd (plus it's bloody annoying that they won't even admit they're blocking it!)

it's not blocked by dns or anything, incidentally - the 'network error' is an actual page the proxy server is serving up; they're just trying to make it look like a network error because there is no plausible reason for them to ban lj

Yup, I'm pretty sure it's intentional. They did block lj's UAE community that one time. We have a tunnel in Texas (but not joshdavis's).

LiveJournal can be accessed if you put in the automatic proxy configuration address (http://proxy.emirates.net.ae/proxy.pac).

Let me know if you guys can make it to Karama for Indian food sometime next week. My treat.

Yes - I don't think it's supposed to be blocked

It's just an error.

Do you get the same error if you try to open Skype.com? I do!

Re: Yes - I don't think it's supposed to be blocked

Skype they've done deliberately - they've actually removed it from their DNS servers (so fking pathetic).

If you want, I can set you up with a shell account on my system. You can use putty or other full function ssh client to open a socks proxy through my system, which would be encrypted, and would allow you to relay, with netlag, your normal traffic through the US.

If ssh isn't blocked from you to me, it would work. I've used this procedure to get to LJ and email and such from secured/restricted networks.

Also, since it's a socks proxy, it's pretty secure - no return traffic that's not pre-openned will come back to you through the tunnel.

Wait, I'm confused-- they block sites even at home? Is this, like, a government thing that the UAE does?

Many Asian countries block internet traffic based on arbitrary or moralistic criteria with little or no recourse. Sort of a more strict version of big brother.

Yeah! And interestingly, look at a recent post on istara's journal, where UAE citizens are complaining that the same telecom company isn't doing enough to monitor our text messages!!
