You, and Me, and Rainbows [Jan. 11th, 2010|10:25 pm]

I saw these amazing clouds over the northern part of Europe today. I haven't figured out what type of clouds they are, or what they are. They aren't Northern Lights. I've seen Northern Lights, and they dance. These weren't dancing. They were way higher than clouds tend to be - we were flying at 38,000 feet. The pilots thought they were ice crystals acting as a prism to the sunrise, but neither of them had ever seen anything like it before. It was amazing and beautiful.

Re: Woah!

Yay, you're looking at it! =D I just emailed you, ordering you to check it out.

It was amazing! It was so, so pretty. Sort of hard to photograph. I had to leave the galley unattended to take pictures, and someone had just ordered coffee and a plate of cheese, so I was taking pictures going, "It's just so pretty... I hope the interphone isn't ringing... so pretty... whoa... I need to plate that cheese... whoa... wow... whoa." When my pictures stopped turning out, I went to the galley, and caught three other crew passing by in the middle of doing stuff. Each time, I went, "Get in the cockpit now. Look at the sky." "But I was just -" "Now. Go. Now. Look at the sky." And staring out the tiny window on the fuselage door whilst plating cheese. :-)

Re: Woah!

I didn't get pictures of Reno at sunset, but it looked cool. Blankets of clouds sitting on endless powder, with the ski slopes all lit up bright, and a cheerful little brightly lit airport next to it!

Re: Woah!

Oh, and in case it wasn't obvious, I didn't do color correction on these pictures.

Thanks, I just might! I'm going through http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Atmospheric_optical_phenomena at the moment, looking for something similar. Man, are there some pretty pictures in these articles.

I have seen rainbow clouds like that before but I didn't know what they were! I was hiking up high in the mountains in the late summer, but the weather was cold. I think you have a good hypothesis with the ice crystals thing.

I have told many people about seeing "rainbow clouds" but few of them believed me! They were magnificent, tho. I wish I'd had a camera at the time. Glad you were able to get some great pics! That's so awesome!!!!!
