Meanwhile, I've been reading a thick volume of John Cheever stories I found on the foreign media shelf (aka the stack of books, magazines, and videos in our stairwell). My favorites so far are "The Sorrows of Gin," "The Day the Pig Fell into the Well," "The Five-Forty-Eight," and I've reread my old favorites, "Reunion" and "The Enormous Radio." Will the mystery gringo who abandoned this book please step forward?
I'm swimming in unanswered emails, unposted pictures, and unread friends' lists. I'll try to get back to each and every one of you within 36 hours.
Meanwhile, evilbil! Thanks for coming out to Kobe last weekend. I just read that you had missed your bus -- eek! How did that happen? I thought we had it sussed. And an empty bank account?? Oh noooo!! If only we'd known before you went on your way! I didn't expect your trip would end in such misfortune. We loved having you here and we both really hope to see you in the future. Cuz you're coming back to Japan someday, right? If so, there's a good chance we'll still be here. We had a great time drinking and singing with you, and seeing Kobe through new eyes with you. I'll post the pictures tonight or tomorrow night. Mata, ne!
Tomorrow is Tanabata no Hi: Star Evening, when Vega and Altair will have their annual rendezvous. It's vital one spends this day with his or her hunny. Last summer, Don and I lit Roman Candles and blooming shells on Kataounami Beach in Wakayama. What will we do this year?
